![]() When 19th century biographer William Downes wrote to American artist Winslow Homer proposing a book, he received this characteristically modest reply: "I think that it would probably kill me to have such a thing appear, and as the best part of my life is of no interest to the public I must decline." Not unlike Winslow Homer, southeastern artist Tim Bruce is a modest man of few words but many works. So, what may be learned of his life and the workings of his mind must be discovered within his work. Tim Bruce might be described as a pictorial poet or storyteller, even though he would likely rail at such lofty language. Self-deprecating and possessing a wry humor and insight regarding life, his work is imbued with an atmosphere of days gone by and irretrievably lost, which we all at times find ourselves yearning to recapture. Technically astute yet not overly rendered, Tim's paintings go far beyond the efforts of so-called "genre" artists. They are products of well-considered design reconciled with naturalistic representation and expression. Tim's gifts transcend those of the two-dimensional limitations of painting into that of the three-dimensional world as attested to by his handsomely realized sculptures, an aspect of his art to which his is dedicating more and more of his efforts. There are brilliant painters and there are brilliant sculptors. Rarely does an artist come along who is brilliant in both mediums. Tim Bruce is that rarity. Tim Bruce is a native North Carolinian whose artwork is well known to discerning collectors, both private and corporate, across the United States and beyond. Tim is a 1977 graduate of the Ringling School of Arts in Sarasota, Florida. He had a highly successful career as a freelance illustrator and is the recipient of numerous national illustration awards including the prestigious Society of Illustrators, the New York Art Directors Club, the Graphic Design USA, and the International Graphics awards. Many of his limited edition prints are now sold out and command a great deal of interest in the secondary market. Tim currently resides, paints and sculpts in King, North Carolina.
